Well, to start with, this IS a really typical story, of two Best friends...you know, the same old thing... greatest of enemies to start with, then good friends, then best friends, and then, yeah, well... no prizes for guessing that, Love... :) But then there is a small twist in the tale... so this really isnt all that filmy as it sounds... so read on to know their story...
The first time Em met Jay, she hated him from the core...she thought Jay had an attitude problem. The place they met? Believe it, they met at a famous hot dog stall in downtown. They literally bumped into each other, coz they werent really concentrating on the road...
"Oops!! I'm so sorry...", said Em.
Em thought that the guy would be polite enough and say, "Its Ok", but...
"Sorry??!! What the hell!! Do you have a vision issue girl?? Or is this the way you trap guys into your net??!!"
Em was furious. She had never been talked to by anyone like this. She felt insulted in front of her friends.
"How can you accuse someone you dont even know like this?? What do you think you are Mister??"
And then it began, a long tale of "shut up"s, "get lost"s, and "buzz off"s. It went on to even crowd the lane!! After their anger was justifiably satiated, they went their own ways.
Em had a job interview the other day, and was very confident of getting through. And so she did... soon it was time for her to join the firm, and report to her manager. To her horror (no, her manager wasnt Jay), her manager introduced her to Jay, a team member with whom she would have to interact almost everyday. She was in a fix. She didnt know what to do...but then, she didnt really have a choice. She accepted this to be a part of her misery and also gave in to the fact that she's gonna have to see a face she dreaded, every day.
And that is exactly what happened. Well, not the "dreading" thing of course, but she did see Jay everyday at work. Soon, Em and Jay became good colleagues, she kinda began to realize that what she actually thought of Jay was probably wrong. He was a good person at heart, good looking too (without a doubt :D), and a very good guide. Coincidentally, she found herself going up to him almost everyday, with some or the other doubts. He had a big group of friends...Em was new there, and she was pretty lonely. New city, new people, new surroundings. She had managed to make a couple of female friends, but none shared the zest that Em had, for life. She found that zest only in Jay. One fine day while at work, Jay invited Em for lunch. Em hesitated, but she didnt really have a choice. So she went with Jay and all his other colleagues at work. And to her surprise, she enjoyed herself a lot with them!! So it started, the everyday lunches, and everyday dinners before going home. They were a group of three; Em, Jay and Ted. Em began to have the time of her life...never had she felt so independent, never had she had so much fun in her lifetime... she liked spending time with Jay, and it was the same with Jay too...and so, to make a long story short, I would go on and say that Em and Jay really became very good friends...Best Friends. But for Em, he was more than a "Best Friend"...much much more...
It was a sunny Saturday. Em was meeting her friend Roy today. Roy is an old friend of Em. She shares everything with him. But Roy does not live in the same city as Em. He had come to her city on an official trip.
"I have something to tell you Roy".
"I can see it in your eyes Em. Go on...tell me what it is"
"I've told you about Jay haven't I? That friend of mine at work? I think I like him".
"Like him??? Or Love him??"
"Well...I have really strong feelings for him, but I dont know how to tell him Roy".
"If you think he loves you too, then just open your heart to Jay...and even if he doesnt love you, trust me, you'll feel better. It would be a burden off your shoulders. That is exactly what I did when I had to tell you that I love you, Em" said Roy.
It was a long talk over dinner, and by the time they were done, she decided to tell Jay that she loved him. She also decided to wait until Monday, so that she could tell him after office hours...
It was Monday morning. Sunday wasnt really easy for Em. She had been contemplating whether to tell Jay or not, the whole day. It was now or never for her today.
She picked Jay from his apartment, and they reached the office building. Before they entered the premises, she stopped Jay and said, "I wanna talk to you today. Keep youself free after 6 pm."
"Hey!! Thats such a coincidence!! I wanna talk to you too", said Jay.
They smiled at each other and went inside.
6:30 pm. They were at the terrace of their office. Jay spoke first.
"Remember the girl I had spoken to you about? Roop? Well, I agreed to that alliance. Mom and Dad really liked her a lot, so I had to give in. We are getting engaged in August."
Em was shattered. Em was heart-broken. Em, was silent.
But she was happy coz Jay was.
"Wow!! Thats great Jay!! Congratulations!! I am really very happy for you."
Em could never tell Jay what she felt for him. Jay looked so happy, that she didnt wanna spoil his moment. And so they talked about Roop the whole evening.
What do think Jay was thinking when he told her about Roop? Was he really so happy?? Read further to know...
That night, Jay spoke with Ted.
"I told her about Roop yaar. I thought she will cry, but she was really happy for me."
"Didn't you tell her that you love her?" asked Ted.
"I couldn't!!! I dont know if she loves me too...and by the looks of it, I dont think she does. She looked too happy for me!!"
"Yeah right!! You'll never know until you tell her dude..."
Jay and Ted didn't speak much about it. But Jay never told Em what he felt for her.
It was just a month for the wedding to happen. Jay had made Em a part of almost every preparation for the wedding. She even helped him with their honeymoon package!! It was very difficult for Em. But she never said a word; she took it all in.
One day, after dinner, when Em was dropping Jay home, she suddenly stopped in the middle of the road.
"What happened Em? You OK?"
"Jay, I need to talk to you. Right now."
They parked the vehicle nearby and Em spoke. Jay knew that this was the moment. But Jay also knew something else.
"I love you. I have always loved you. Even the day you told me about Roop, I wanted to tell you this. But I couldnt. Today I couldnt take it anymore. I had to take it out of my system. I dont expect anything from you. I dont even want you to take any steps. I just wanted to tell you what I feel. I wanted this burden off my shoulders." She said it all in one breath, and began to cry, like a baby.
Jay knew this was coming. But he also knew that he was now responsible for the happiness of two families. He couldnt have gone back on his word now.
"Em, I thought I knew this, but I never asked."
"Jay, have you ever felt the same for me even once? Ever??"
Jay didn't want to give Em any kind of hope. Although he had loved her always, he was aware of the fact that now he couldnt speak the truth.
"Em, all I can say is that you have all that I seek in my life partner. I wont say anything more than this. I cant answer your question any better."
Em was feeling much better now. She did what Roy had told her to do, and yes, she did not regret it at all. She smiled back at Jay, stopping the conversation there, and started the car.
A year has passed. Em and Jay are still Best Friends. Em is married to Roy, and Jay to Roop. Em got married to Roy six months after Jay and Roop tied the knot. Today is Jay and Roop's first wedding anniversary. Em called Jay to wish him.
"Happy first anniversary dude!!"
"Thanks a lot Em. How have you been?"
"I'm ekdum mast!! Enjoying life with Roy. You tell me, how was the first year of marital bliss??"
"Hehe........................"
They spoke for a long time on phone. And while talking, the topic suddenly drifted to them, to Em and Jay.
"Jay do you remember the first time we fought? Remember our first candle light dinner? Our first game of bowling?"
"Yes Em, I do. I remember everything. Remember the fight with a crook we had had? Remember hogging hotdogs at Benny's Den?? Remember driving reverse in the night on the main road??"
"Oh yes!! I do!! Wow!! You remember everything!!! Thanks a lot Jay... I thought you would forget all that..."
"Those are wonderful memories Em. I can never forget them."
"Yeah I know........................................."
Both Em and Jay are very happy with their lives, but they were happier today coz they both hadnt forgotten anything. Each and every moment they spent was precious, for both of them. Each and every moment they spent had brought them closer to each other, as friends. Theirs was a friendship bordering on love. But they were, are and will remain Best Friends.

Dear Em and Jay, guys, memories are lovely...enjoy them as you are enjoying, but unless you forget them, ...well you will never realize the beauty of your present...which will be your memory for tommorow.

Savita... one word to express my feelings would be... "Beautiful". The word might have lost its significance as its one of the most often used.. even though its not meant by heart... But U have got its life back!! The way u have written is very touching!!! Hats-off to u!
